Elkanah Bottomley, son of John Bottomley of Soyland, was baptised on 30
November 1753 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden, West Riding of Yorkshire.[i]
He worked as a Wool Comber in one
of the mills at Soyland in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Elkanah married Susan Lum at St Mary, Elland, West Riding of
Yorkshire on 15 April 1770. Neither were literate enough to sign their names.
Their banns were called at St Mary's on the Sundays of 18 March, 25 March, and
1 April.[ii]
Whilst we have no further
information about Elkanah or Susan, we do know that they had at least five
children:
i.
Mally Bottomley
was baptised on 10 February 1771 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden.
ii.
Sally Bottomley
was baptised on 29 March 1772 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden.
iii.
James Bottomley
was baptised on 12 June 1774 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden.
iv.
Isaac Bottomley was born in 1776 and baptised
on 25 December 1776 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden.
v.
Elkanah Bottomley
was baptised on 22 June 1783 at St Bartholomew, Ripponden.
